Chapter 2 I Don't Need a Heartless Jerk

Rory Leighton stopped the car in front of Orchard Vista in westside Raleigh. The entire building was brightly lit, and Lacey, the maid, was already waiting at the entrance. "Ms. Leigh, you're back."

Meghan nodded and walked in.

Orchard Vista was the wedding gift that the Collinson family had given her two years ago on the eve of her marriage. Yet in these two years, she had only gone back a handful of times. Lacey had been taking care of it.

Meghan thought, my family had nothing when we went bankrupt. Maybe that's why Conrad thinks I'm hogging the position of his wife. He thinks I'm going after his family's money and fame.

In his eyes, without his family, I won't even have a place to stay.

What Conrad doesn't know is that the only reason why I marry him and am willing to sacrifice everything is that I love him.

Now, I'm tired. I don't want to love him anymore.

"Lacey, I'm going to move back from now on. Sorry to trouble you." Meghan leaned back on the sofa with a tired face.

"Ms. Leigh, it is my job to take care of you. As for Mr. Collinson..." Lacey could tell that Meghan must have suffered a lot, or she wouldn't have moved back in the middle of the night.

"If he asks, just tell him the truth." Meghan knew that certain things could not be hidden from Reynaldo Collinson, her grandfather, as well as the Collinson family.

She thought, Conrad probably wants everyone in the world to know that he will marry Addison. It's only a matter of time before the Collinson family finds out.

These days, ever since Addison returned to the country, Conrad's indifference to me has always made me tense. Now that everything has settled down, I know that I should live only for myself from now on.

I don't need a heartless jerk!

When Meghan woke up, it was already close to noon. She took her phone and saw messages on Line from the group chat she had with her two besties. The messages had already flooded her screen!

"Meghan, Addison, that vixen, is back. She has been pestering your husband every day. Aren't you going to do something?"

"Meghan must be very sad..."

"Meghan, it is not worth it for that jerk!"

"Meghan, don't worry. We will be there for you!"

Meghan looked at the photo sent by Nyasia Farrell. In the photo, Conrad was at Acme Art Gallery with Addison, talking to Lamont Figueroa, the director of the gallery. It seemed that the online rumor that Addison came back to hold an art exhibition was true.

Yet it no longer had anything to do with Meghan.

She replied to them: "I am divorced."

The next second, Meghan heard someone inviting her for a video chat on Line. She lazily pressed the button to accept and heard Nyasia's surprised voice. Nyasia said, "Meghan, are you serious? You are joking, right?"

"No. We are divorced..." Meghan grinned.

"You love him so much. How so? It's because of Addison, isn't it? Are you really going to let them get their way?" At first, Nyasia was strongly against Meghan marrying Conrad. After all, everyone in Raleigh knew about things going on between him and Addison.

Yet Nyasia knew well that Meghan loved Conrad so much that she was willing to marry him despite everything.

"I have tried already. I spent two entire years. Yet still, he doesn't care about me at all. Why should I continue to pester him?" Meghan felt that she had been so stupid before this. She knew that Conrad did not love her, but she still fell for him. In the end, she was the one who got hurt thoroughly.

"What a fantastic decision! Meghan, you are so outstanding. Conrad doesn't deserve you!" Nyasia almost jumped up and clapped her hands.

Meghan smiled helplessly. She figured that in others' eyes, Conrad was out of her league.

"Meghan, I have nothing to do today. Why don't Alma and I go shopping with you? We can have some afternoon tea, too."

Meghan finally got a divorce, and she made up her mind to have a fresh start.

"Great! I'll meet you at the same place." In the past two years, Meghan had spent all her time and energy on currying favor with Conrad.

She cooked for him, but he never gave her food a go. He ignored all the care she offered. No matter how sweet she made the place, he seldom came back. For two years, she was only useful when he needed a companion for a party. On such an occasion, they would act as a loving couple.

Yet she still accepted everything willingly. She figured that one day, he would change. Now that she thought about it, she found herself a joke. The second Addison returned, she, the nominal wife, got his divorce papers.

She expected too much.

By the time Meghan arrived at Bluebell Café downtown, Alma Joyce and Nyasia were already waiting there. As soon as they saw her, they immediately went over to give her a big hug.

"Meghan, come and taste the coffee I made for you myself." The three sat together on the second floor by the window where they got to enjoy the beautiful view.

The three invested in the café together. Alma knew a lot about coffee, and she was a barista. She took care of this café herself after graduation.

Nyasia worked in a fashion magazine and was usually very busy, but compared to work, Meghan was more important to her.

Only Meghan didn't have a career. The moment she graduated, Dana arranged for her to marry Conrad. In the past two years, she basically didn't have a life of her own. Without ego, she played the role of Mrs. Maxwell dutifully.

The three talked about the past and deliberately avoided mentioning Conrad and Addison. But sometimes, one bumped into the people they least wanted to see easily.

Conrad and Addison walked inside. He was wearing a high-end custom-made black suit. With his tall and handsome features, he attracted women's attention wherever he went.

Addison was wearing a light-colored dress. Her delicate features and exquisite makeup made her look gentle. The two looked like a great match.

He had a lot of shopping bags in his hands. It seemed that he was shopping with his beloved woman.

Meghan thought, it turns out that he knows his way around being considerate and gentle. He simply chooses to shut me out from these characters and saves his tenderness and devotion for the woman he loves.

Meghan's heart sank slightly. She figured that she indeed should be glad that she agreed to end the marriage. After all, nothing resulting from coercion was going to be agreeable. She would be the only one who suffered.

"Conrad, the coffee here is great. I'm sure you'll love it." Addison had been to the café before, so she took Conrad here to try out.

"The scenery on the second floor is fascinating." They walked up to the second floor together and looked up only to see Meghan and the others.

Conrad narrowed his eyes, and his face darkened. Meghan didn't want to bump into them either, but out of all the cafés, they chose to be here.

Addison didn't seem awkward at all. She went forward to greet Meghan, "Meghan, what a coincidence that you're here for coffee as well."

Somehow, her words made Meghan uncomfortable.

Addison's words did make Conrad's expression even colder as if Meghan had been waiting for them here deliberately.

"Coincidence? Is that what you call it? Ms. Eva, I thought it was you who were anxious enough to be Mrs. Maxwell and came here to rub it in my nose." Addison had sent her intimate photos with Conrad to Meghan privately. At the thought of that, Meghan was disgusted and furious.
