It was a pitch-dark night in late autumn.
Near midnight, Meghan, who was about to sleep, heard the sound of a car driving into the villa. He was back!
Not long after, the bedroom door was kicked open. Conrad walked in and looked coldly at the woman in front of him, his nominal wife.
"Meghan, Addison is back. Let's get a divorce."
Meghan narrowed her eyes and looked at the divorce papers in his hand. "Conrad, you came so late just to divorce me?"
She thought, for the past two years since we got married, he has been back to the villa only a handful of times. I guess he wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the divorce papers.
"What do you think?" Conrad asked indifferently.
"What if I say no?" There was an inscrutable smile on her face and stubbornness in her eyes. "Conrad, what makes you think I'd agree to a divorce? What makes you think I'll give you my blessing after two years?"
"You..." His eyes were filled with hatred and ruthlessness. In the next second, his broad palms were already around her neck.
Overwhelmed by the strong smell of alcohol, Meghan frowned and said with difficulty, "Are you going to strangle me for the sake of Addison Eva?"
The man in front of her had become so unfamiliar. She could no longer recognize whether this man was the person she used to be deeply in love with.
After a long time, when Meghan felt that she was suffocating, he finally let go.
Meghan powerlessly slumped on the ground, gasping for breath. Even though she suffocated to the point where she could hardly breathe, the feeling was no match for the wrenching pain in her heart.
"What the heck do you want?" Conrad looked down at the ghastly pale Meghan. "Is two years of marriage not enough for you? I don't love you. It won't change no matter how long we are married!"
His words were killing her.
She thought, you are right. The fact that you don't love me has never changed. It is so confident of me to think that by devoting myself, I can make you fall for me even for just a little bit.
"So what if you don't love me? I'm still Mrs. Maxwell, your wife, and she, Addison, will stay a mistress forever!" Meghan dared not give in, for it was the last bit of pride and dignity she had left.
"Do you really enjoy being Mrs. Maxwell that much?" Conrad thought, even if I don't love you, you still want the title?
"The Maxwell family is rich and powerful, and countless women want to be Mrs. Maxwell. I am not stupid. By holding on to the position of your wife, I get to keep half of the Maxwell family's assets." Her words successfully annoyed him, and his deep eyes turned gloomier.
He thought, good! Good for you, Meghan! Then I might as well fulfill your wishes!
Before she could react, he had already pulled her up from the ground and mercilessly thrown her on the bed. Her world had been turned upside down. She felt dizzy, and her mind was blank.
"Meghan, I underestimated you!" He thought, how dare she ask for half of my family's assets? Who gives her the nerve?
When he finished speaking, he was on top of her.
"You... What do you want to do?" Meghan wanted to push him away, but her strength was no match for his. She knew that Conrad hated her and would never touch her. That was why she dared to anger him. And right now, they were so close to each other, and she panicked. It was not within her expectations.
"You want to be Mrs. Maxwell, don't you? I'll help you be the real Mrs. Maxwell!" As he spoke, he had already reached out and pulled her nightgown's belt.
Her nightgown was pulled off, and the straps slid down. He saw her fair skin, and he paused slightly.
"Conrad, are you crazy?" Meghan's eyes were filled with tears. For the past two years, she had always been willing to be his real wife, but not now.
After he proposed a divorce to her, was she supposed to hand over everything she had foolishly?
He had already kissed her lips, and his kiss was rude and overbearing. The rich smell of alcohol filled her mouth, almost suffocating her.
She knew he was trying to get back at her and humiliate her.
"Conrad, aren't you afraid that Addison will be hurt if she finds out about this between us?" Meghan was no match for him in strength.
But she knew what he cared about the most.
He stopped and stood up with a look of disgust.
Meghan pulled the quilt to cover her body, her eyes filled with tears as she looked up at him, who was utterly cold. "Conrad, are you sure Grandma will agree to our divorce?"
"Meghan, don't try to hold Grandma over my head. Four years is enough to repay." Conrad's gaze was gloomy, his cold and handsome face full of anger.
"So, nothing can change your mind, right?" Meghan looked at the man in front of her and felt heartbroken.
The moment would come sooner or later.
Ever since Addison returned to the country, Meghan knew that she and Conrad could no longer even be a nominal couple.
She thought of the provocative texts that Addison had sent her today.
"Meghan, divorce him. The person Conrad loves has always been me. Why do you need to cling on to the position of Mrs. Maxwell?"
"As long as you agree to divorce, I'll ask Conrad to give you a lot of money to make sure you lead a carefree life."
"Meghan, Conrad is way out of your league. He only says my name in bed. Don't embarrass yourself too much."
Four years ago, the Leigh family went bankrupt. Before Larissa Timothy, Meghan's mother, passed away, she entrusted Meghan to Dana Bach, Conrad's grandma. Dana agreed to take care of Meghan since Larissa had saved Dana's life. As a result, Meghan stayed in the Maxwell's home for four years. Two years ago, as soon as she graduated from college, she became Conrad's wife.
In Conrad's eyes, Meghan was scheming, greedy, and vain. She pretended to be obedient when facing Dana, forced Addison away, and became Conrad's wife.
As far as Conrad was concerned, the Maxwell family paid off a large amount of debt for the Leigh family and provided Meghan with a comfortable life, which was enough to repay Larissa. He couldn't believe that Meghan would be so greedy.
Conrad threw the divorce papers in front of Meghan. "Sign it. I'll transfer the villa to your name. Plus, there are 5 million dollars on this card. Take the card. Don't try to morally kidnap Grandma again, just because your mother saved her life before. Grandma has done enough for you."
It was his compensation for her consent to divorce. Also, he was implying that from now on, she would be a stranger to the Maxwell family.
She thought, perhaps in his eyes, I am nothing but despicable and shameless.
Meghan turned to the last page of the divorce papers and saw that he had signed his name already. He really looked like he couldn't wait.
Her hands clenched into fists, and her fingertips dug into her palms, but she couldn't feel any pain.
There was a hint of bitterness in her eyes. She thought, I guess I have been way too persistent.
It's time for my feelings for him and the two years of our nominal marriage to come to an end.
Meghan signed and handed the agreement back to him. The two years of marriage officially ended.
"Conrad, from now on, we will walk our own separate paths. We will be strangers when we meet again."
Conrad took the divorce papers and glanced at her indifferently. He turned and left, unwilling to stay for another second.
For two years, she had waited for him in this huge villa just so that when he was back, he wouldn't be alone. Now it all seemed like a joke.
She made a call and packed overnight. She took her belongings away and didn't give a damn about those that did not belong to her.
Since she had agreed to the divorce, she figured that she should have a clean break with him and forget everything about him.
Half an hour later, a black Mercedes-Benz stopped outside the villa. Meghan sat in the car and said, "Rory, go back to Orchard Vista."
